Both drivers escaped injury during a traffic accident in Edgecomb Monday afternoon that involved a tractor trailer ripping open the side of a box truck, according to Lincoln County Sheriff’s Deputy Chad Gilbert.
A semi-truck with a 53 foot-long trailer driven by Oumar Hassan, 36, of Michigan was headed southbound on Rt. 27 just north of the McKay Road in Edgecomb when the trailer’s rear end crossed onto the oncoming lane to strike another vehicle, Gilbert said.
The trailer struck a northbound box truck operated by Jason Ham, 34, of South Berwick and pushed it off the road into a utility pole, Gilbert said.
The trailer peeled back roughly six feet of the side of the side of the truck Ham was driving, which spilled a number of white plastic chairs onto the roadway. The utility pole was severed near its base, but remained upright.
Hassan allegedly “felt a little bump” and continued driving, not noticing he had struck another vehicle, Gilbert said. Once Hassan noticed the damage, he pulled over at Dave’s AG in Boothbay, Gilbert said.
The Edgecomb Fire Department received a page for a single vehicle accident on Rt. 27 at about 2:40 p.m., said Chief Roy Potter.
The department wasn’t aware it was a two vehicle accident until one of the responding firefighters headed north on Rt. 27 saw the tractor trailer pulled over with its damaged rear end, Potter said.
No charges are likely as a result of the accident, Gilbert said.
