Edgecomb firefighters responded to a report of smoke filling a hallway at Edgecomb Green, an assisted-living home at 31 Cross Point Rd., shortly after 4 p.m., Saturday, March 7.
Mutual aid was alerted but canceled once firefighters arrived on the scene and discovered a section of the building filling with steam from a burst heating pipe, Edgecomb Fire Chief Roy Potter said.
“Anytime there’s a report of smoke, we like to get people started,” Potter said.
The pipe had apparently been frozen, Potter said, and burst open due to a partial thaw. Potter said he was able to identify the valve controlling the pipe in Edgecomb Green’s boiler room and shut it off.
Edgecomb Green is run by the ElderCare Network of Lincoln County. According to the network’s website, the Edgecomb Green is a house that provides elder care in a home environment. Approximately six to eight residents live in the house.
According to Potter, the house serves seniors with assisted-living needs and independent seniors. The independent portion of the house was affected by the burst pipe. One resident evacuated that portion of the house, but all residents were able to remain inside the building.
Staff at Edgecomb Green will be in touch with the heating company that services the building to fix the pipe, Potter said.
