It was a busy weekend in Edgecomb. On May 18 Edgecomb voters elected Stuart Smith for selectman with 69 votes. Opponents Marilee Harris and Byron Johnson, Jr. had 51 and 19 votes respectively.
On May 19, at their annual town meeting, Edgecomb voters passed a $3.4 million municipal budget. All articles passed as written except for a $2000 increase in the education budget to help pay for sixth graders to attend Chewonki camp next fall.
Voters approved using $100,000 from surplus to reduce the tax commitment, and the Adult Entertainment Ordinance passed with little discussion.
The ordinance restricts where and when any adult entertainment businesses are allowed to operate in Edgecomb. They are not allowed within 1500 feet of a school, residence, or place of worship, and can only operate between the hours of 10 a.m. and midnight. There cannot be two adult entertainment businesses within 1500 feet of each other.
On May 20, the Edgecomb Fire Dept. hosted an open house and ribbon cutting ceremony for the new fire department.
Selectman Jack Sarmanian cut the ribbon with a fire axe found in the wall of the old fire station when it was being torn down.
A new (reconditioned) fire truck and a pick-up truck were obtained from the Verona, N.J. Fire Dept. thanks to Edgecomb resident and firefighter Steven Fenton, who lives in Verona for part of the year.
Complete stories on the weekend’s events in Edgecomb will appear in the May 24 print edition of The Lincoln County News.
