The Edgecomb Planning Board approved an application to erect a cellphone tower on Bob Brown’s property at 491 Boothbay Road in Edgecomb after a public hearing on Thursday, June 19.
Chairman Jack French said two residents attended the public hearing and asked a few technical questions about the project. No one at the public hearing expressed opposition to the project.
“It was hard to keep everyone awake,” French said.
Resident Dave Boucher asked if the town’s fire department would have access to the tower to place an antenna to improve communications.
Attorney Barry Hobbins, representing co-applicants American Tower LLC and AT&T, said as long as the equipment was compatible, the owners would grant access.
The five-member planning board voted unanimously to approve the project. The town will issue a building permit as soon as it receives a $600 fee.
The approval gives a go-ahead to a project that began last fall to improve cellphone reception in the area. AT&T and American Tower Company first approached the town with a proposal to lease a piece of land on the fire station site, however, that site did not meet the town’s setback requirement.
The company pursued the Brown property and submitted a new application in March.
The tower will be 100 feet high and set on a 50-by-50-foot cement base, which will be fenced in. The site will also include a shed for electronic equipment and a 10-foot sound barrier.
