The Edgecomb woman indicted on a charge of arson in November 2011 has reached a plea agreement with prosecutors and will not go to jail.
Karen B. Smith, 52, pleaded guilty to aggravated criminal mischief, a Class C felony, Aug. 9.
If she continues counseling and performs 100 hours of community service by Aug. 1, 2013, the state will downgrade the charge to misdemeanor failure to control or report a dangerous fire and Smith will pay a $200 fine.
If she fails to meet the terms of the agreement, she would face sentencing for the felony aggravated criminal mischief charge, including possible jail time.
She will remain free on $10,000 unsecured bail until the Aug. 1, 2013 hearing. Her bail conditions forbid her to use or possess any incendiary devices.
The Lincoln County News will follow with a complete report in our Aug. 16 print edition.
