Regulators have made changes that will extend the season for Northern shrimp and allow larger catches for the trap fishery.
On March 8 the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission Northern Shrimp Section voted to allow fishing seven days a week in both the trap and trawl fisheries, according to a notice on the Department of Marine Resources website at maine.gov/dmr. The shrimp section also remove the trap fishery daily possession limit.
Both trap and trawl fisheries will close Friday, April 12. Previously, the seasons for both trap and trawl fisheries was left open ended and set to end when 85 percent of the total shrimp quota set by the ASMFC was met.
Additionally, Commissioner Patrick Keliher has amended fishing hours to allow trawl fishing from sunrise to sunset.
These changes became effective March 13 and continue until further notice.
