Evenings and early mornings in Edgecomb, normally the best time to risk a drive through the Midcoast’s notorious traffic bottleneck in neighboring Wiscasset, now features single lane traffic and accompanying waits for commuters and tourists.
A paving project begins near the Donald E. Davey Bridge and extends to the intersection of Rt. 1 and Rt. 27.
According to Mark Latti, Public Information Officer for the Maine Department of Transportation (DOT), Lane Construction paved the same area last summer, but the job did not meet the specifications in their contract.
Lane Construction will not receive payment for the second round of paving.
After completion of the work in Edgecomb, the contractor will continue north along a 12.25-mile swath of Rt. 1 extending past the intersection of Rt. 1 and East Pond Road.
Motorists can expect lane closures along portions of that stretch to last into October, Latti said. The closures begin at 7 p.m. and end at 7 a.m., Sunday through Thursday. Crews might occasionally work Friday nights, too.
