A driver’s failure to yield caused a three-vehicle accident at the intersection of Route 1 and Belvedere Road in Damariscotta the afternoon of Wednesday, Sept. 7.
One woman was transported to the hospital after two cars collided in the southbound lane of Route 1 and were pushed into a third vehicle waiting at a stop sign on Belvedere Road on the southbound side of Route 1, according to Damariscotta Police Officer Kyle Sylvester.
Jay Norwalk, 76, of Newcastle, driving a 2016 Mercedes-Benz E-Class, made a left-hand turn from the Belvedere Road on the northbound side of Route 1 into the southbound lane of Route 1, Sylvester said.
Ronald Bastian, 72, of Boothbay, was driving a 2013 Ford Fusion south on Route 1, Sylvester said. Christine Bastian, 72, also of Boothbay, was a passenger in the vehicle.
Norwalk did not see Bastian’s vehicle and pulled out in front of him, Sylvester said. The vehicles collided in the southbound lane. The collision forced the Ford Fusion into a 2002 GMC 2500 pickup truck, which was stopped at the stop sign at Belvedere Road on the southbound side of Route 1. The pickup truck was operated by Sarah Gladu, 44, of Waldoboro.
Christine Bastian was transported to LincolnHealth’s Miles Campus in Damariscotta, Sylvester said. She was treated and released, according to hospital personnel.
Norwalk’s failure to yield the right of way caused the accident, Sylvester said. No charges are pending.
The three vehicles were towed from the scene by Quick Turn Auto Repair & Towing, of Damariscotta, Sylvester said.
The Damariscotta Police Department, Central Lincoln County Ambulance Service, and Damariscotta Fire Department responded to the scene.
