A family of four is safe, after the Waldoboro Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 992 Winslow Mills Rd. March 16.
According to Fire Chief Paul Smeltzer, the call came in at 10:31 p.m. and he arrived at the scene within minutes, reporting fire visible through front window of the residence.
Crews from Waldoboro, Jefferson, Nobleboro and Warren responded, containing the fire to the living room area of the home. Waldoboro Police and Emergency Medical Services also responded to the call.
The rest of the residence sustained heavy heat and smoke damage, Smeltzer said.
The family all got out safely. One cat is missing and another died in the fire, Smeltzer said. The Red Cross is assisting the family.
Warren Fire Department personnel covered the Waldoboro Fire Station during the incident. All firefighters cleared the scene at 12:12 a.m.
Smeltzer said the building was originally used as a post office and country store and had been converted into a residence. He said the fire started in the living room.
Sergeant Ken Grimes of the State Fire Marshal’s Office said the fire began in the vicinity of the wood stove in the living room.
“Unfortunately, due to the extent of damage in that area, we don’t know the exact sequence of events,” Grimes said March 20. “At this time it doesn’t appear to be anything other an accident.”
Grimes said the house was not insured.
