A Waldoboro man died after he was trapped inside his wrecked car when it went off the Friendship Road in Waldoboro Sunday night.
Wayne Burnham, 44, of Waldoboro was driving his black 2000 Jeep Cherokee south on the Friendship Rd. (Rt. 220) sometime before 7 p.m. Sunday evening when his car left the road and struck a utility pole and several trees.
According to the Waldoboro police, Sgt. Jamie Wilson responded to a call at 6:57 p.m.
Burnham was trapped inside his Jeep, which was found on its side, 40 feet from the edge of the road. Firefighters from the Waldoboro Fire Dept. extricated Burnham from his vehicle and he was then transported to Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta.
A Lifeflight helicopter responded to Miles Memorial Hospital, but was cancelled after Burnham succumbed to his injuries.
Police said speed and alcohol might have contributed to the crash, but the cause of the accident remains under investigation.
Waldoboro EMS, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, Maine State Police and the fire departments of Waldoboro, Friendship and Bremen assisted at the scene.
