Lincoln County Sheriff Todd Brackett has confirmed at least one of the operators involved in a two car head-on collision was killed in the crash, which has temporarily closed Route 1 in Nobleboro.
The accident scene is south of the Nobleboro boat launch.
The status of the other operator and any passengers is unknown at this time, and identities of those involved are being withheld until family members are notified, Brackett said.
Route 1 is currently closed to through traffic, which occurred shortly after 11 a.m. North and southbound traffic is currently being rerouted around the scene via Center Street. Brackett said motorists can expect the detour to remain in effect for a minimum of two or three hours.
According to The Lincoln County News reporter on the scene, one of the vehicles involved appears to have a pickup truck towing a large, fifth-wheel or gooseneck type camper-trailer. The other vehicle appears to be a car, possibly a sedan.
A Maine State Police accident reconstructionist is enroute to assist with the investigation, Brackett said.
Damariscotta, Nobleboro and Newcastle Fire departments units are on the scene along with LCSO personal and at least one Central Linoln County Ambulance Service ambulance.
More information will be posted as it becomes available.
