A morning fire at a Jefferson house on Sept. 1 was contained to a small area of the living room. No one was injured.
No one was home when a heating unit ignited a gas leak at 547 Waldoboro Rd. (Rt. 32) on Sept. 1. A neighbor saw smoke and reported the fire at around 7:30 a.m. Firefighters contained the blaze quickly and cleared the scene just after 8:30 a.m.
The house has been for sale for some time, said Jefferson Fire Chief Walter Morris at the scene about a half hour after firefighters had left.
A break in the gas line where it enters the side of the house appears to have leaked gas into the wall of the house, which was ignited when the heater turned on in the morning, Morris said.
Representatives of the State Fire Marshall’s Office are expected to visit the scene at some point on Sept. 1.
Along with the Jefferson fire crews, mutual aid crews from Whitefield, Waldoboro, Somerville, Washington and Windsor responded to the call.
