Firefighters from six departments responded to a structure fire at the home of longtime Wiscasset residents William and Sheryl Thayer on Sept 30. A passing motorist noticed the ranch style house at 302 Foye Rd. engulfed in flames and called 911 around 1:10 p.m.
Wiscasset fire chief Rob Bickford said the fire appeared to start in the kitchen but an exact cause is not known. No one was home at the time and the blaze is not considered suspicious.
“We were able to get some furniture and clothes out but the structure is 80 percent destroyed,” said Bickford.
Firefighters were able to clear the scene after 4 p.m. Bickford said.
The Red Cross is assisting the Thayers with temporary relief efforts, Bickford said Oct. 1.
The fire departments of Alna, Dresden, Edgecomb, Newcastle, Westport Island and Woolwich all provided assistance. Chief Bickford hailed the coordinated effort as crucial in preventing further damage to the surrounding neighborhood.
