It has been a busy few days for the Boothbay Fire Deptartment.
On Monday afternoon, the department was paged out to brush fire, a permitted burn Boothbay Fire Chief Dick Spofford said got away from the permit holder. About a quarter acre was damaged in that event, Spofford said.
On Sunday Boothbay provided mutual aid support in Boothbay Harbor after an unoccupied house ignited.
On March 7, Boothbay had its own structure fire, losing a house at 4 Back Narrows Road.
Spofford said the March 7 fire destroyed a home that consisted of two mobile homes connected together, with additional housing added on.
Perhaps owing to the construction of the residence, the fire got up to the metal ceiling of the original trailer body, snaked inside along the roof and came down on the other side of the structure to ignite that side.
“It was actually two trailers put together,” Spofford said. “The fire went right down the length of it. It was pretty amazing how it did that.”
Spofford said the fire attack was complicated by the significant amount of heat inside the home.
The home was a complete loss. The homeowner, Mary Peaslee, is staying with friends Spofford said. She was not at home at the time the fire broke out.
The State Fire Marshal has declared the fire caused by undetermined origin, Spofford said, adding it appears like the fire started in the bathroom area.
Boothbay was assisted at the scene by Boothbay Harbor, Edgecomb Southport, Newcastle and Wiscasset. Spofford said mutual aid response worked like clockwork as usual.
“It’s nice to have good neighbors around,” he said.
