A smoky two-alarm fire occurred in a farmhouse at 318 Pond Rd. in Newcastle at around 2 p.m. on Oct. 28.
Newcastle Fire Department, led by Clayton Huntley, responded to the fire, with mutual aid from Damariscotta, Nobleboro, and Wiscasset. Bristol covered the Damariscotta Fire Station.
“We were able to knock down flames in approximately an hour and a half, but it took nearly six hours for the entire scene to be resolved with everything mopped up,” Huntley said.
The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office blocked off Rt. 215 in both directions for nearly four hours while firefighters worked to save the upstairs of the building.
Huntley thinks the fire may have originated in a desk area upstairs with a lot of electronics, but called the Fire Marshal’s office to have them investigate further. He explained he has not received their report on this fire yet, but he believes at this time that the fire was accidental.
Shortly after officials responded to the fire it began to rain; Huntley commended everyone for their dedication in staying for the duration of the event. “These guys did a heck of a job,” said Huntley. “Mutual aid works. We were lucky again to have Vivian Libby’s pond right nearby, she’s been so graceful in letting us use it.”
