Firefighters responded to the scene of a small woods fire located near the eastern intersection of Route 1 and Old Route 1 in Waldoboro this afternoon.
Witnesses had earlier flagged down a group of Waldoboro firefighters in a fire truck returning from an event honoring retiring Rockport Fire Chief Bruce Woodward. The witnesses advised of a fire in the woods. The firefighters were then approached by another witness who reported a possible explosion in the same area, according to Waldoboro Fire Chief Paul Smeltzer.
Smeltzer said he held the firefighters back in case of any further risk of explosion and extinguished the fire from a distance, approaching slowly as it appeared to be safe.
After inspecting the area, there appeared to be no evidence of an explosion, Smeltzer said. It looked to be just a small brush fire and department members were looking into the cause, he said.
Smeltzer said department members would be speaking with residents of the area to find out more information about the cause of the fire.
There have been no injuries reported to either firefighters or civilians at the time of this posting.
The Lincoln County News will continue to follow the progress of this event and post any additional information here as soon as it is obtained.
