A passing fisherman reported a structure fire on the west side of South Bristol’s Inner Heron Island around 10:15 this morning. About 20 firefighters from Bristol and South Bristol responded to the call, and had the fire largely under control by 11:40 a.m.
At least three local fishermen assisted the response effort by ferrying firefighters out to the scene.
Crews from both towns boarded Johnny Seiders’s Comin and Goin, Chuck Plummer’s Samuel Ryan and Francis Seiders’s RPJJ, to head out to the island, which did not sustain any further damage because winds were blowing from the northeast.
Early reports indicate the fire started in a fireplace, and that there were no injuries.
This is the second fire on Inner Heron in recent years, the first caused by a lightening strike. South Bristol’s Chuck Plummer said, “If there’s any positive in this, it’s that the wind was blowing in the right direction.”
Updates will be made as they become available.
