The Great Salt Bay Ice Fishing Derby attracted hundreds of participants Saturday and raised thousands of dollars for the Great Salt Bay Community School playground.
Waldoboro resident Jared Simmons caught the biggest fish, a 10.02-pound brown trout, at Alfred Lake in Hope.
The lifelong fisherman said he hooked the fish, his biggest catch ever, around 7 a.m. and landed it with help from his brother after a 30-minute fight.
Simmons brought home an ice auger, courtesy of Newcastle Chrysler Dodge Jeep; and a jumbo Jet Sled, courtesy of The Route 66 Snowmobile Club.
Sadie Jamison, 4, of Phippsburg, won the youth division with a 5.59-pound largemouth bass, a late resident of Winnegance Lake in Phippsburg.
Jamison collected trophies for the biggest fish and biggest largemouth bass, as well as a pack basket, a prize bucket and traps.
Adam Newall, of Warren, won the big door prize, 150 gallons of heating oil from Dead River Company; while Lisa Hargreaves won a cord of firewood from Adam Rice Forestry.
The organizers distributed about 50 prizes for fish and many door prizes, all donated by area businesses, organizations and residents.
The event raised at least $5000. Ticket sales totaled more than $2500 before the doors opened for the weigh-in and Modern Woodmen of America provided a $2500 match. The Lincoln County News will report a final fundraising figure when it is available.
Steve Peaslee, one of the organizers of the derby, said he hopes to continue it as an annual event, possibly to benefit a different cause or organization each year.
