Two local juveniles have been arrested in connection with the disappearance of a number of traffic cones set out during last week’s near hurricane to warn the public of downed trees, dangling electric wires and road washouts.
Lincoln County Sheriff’s Deputy Mark Bridgham said the two were arrested earlier this week after he received an e-mail suggesting he might be interested in some information on the Internet.
“Imagine that,” he said.
Bridgham, who serves as Lincoln Academy School Resource Officer, said he followed up on the tip, arrested the two and recovered five cones. The juveniles have been charged with the theft of 10 cones/barriers in total.
Bridgam warned that theft of the traffic cones is not a joke.
“These cones are not just $200 worth of plastic. These are devices used to warn the public of danger,” he said. “Someone could have been seriously hurt.”
During the storm, the towns of Waldoboro, Bremen, Bristol, Edgecomb and Damariscotta reported as many as 60 to 70 traffic cones disappeared from roads.
