A Jefferson resident’s garage was saved from burning to the ground after a nearby shed caught fire at a home on the corner of Maple Lane and the East Pond Rd. on March 14.
According to Jefferson Fire and Rescue Chief Sheridan Bond, the resident was upstairs in the office of his house doing income taxes when fire department personnel from Jefferson, Whitefield, Somerville and Nobleboro arrived in his dooryard to attack the fiery blaze.
“He didn’t hear us until we drove into his yard,” Bond said of the resident. “He didn’t know the shed or garage was on fire.”
Bond said the fire, fully engulfing the storage building, had spread to the three-bay garage, which firefighters were able to put out when they responded to the scene at 1:30 Saturday afternoon. Fire department personnel from Windsor and Washington covered other stations per mutual aid protocol.
Neither of the two vehicles inside the garage was damaged, according to Bond. He said the storage shed was completely burnt, with the walls still mostly standing. There were no injuries as a result of the fire.
Bond said firefighters believe the fire was caused by spontaneous combustion of materials inside the shed. He said the shed had no electric power source.
