Senator David Trahan’s legislative response to Bristol’s Wolf Ledge Refuge is now law.
Governor Paul LePage signed L.D. 11, “An Act to Regulate the Keeping of Wolf Hybrids,” May 19. As the bill contained an emergency provision, it took effect immediately.
Although the law significantly alters and tightens regulation of the animals, Jim Doughty, the president and founder of Wolf Ledge Refuge, has said he’ll continue with his plans for the sanctuary while complying with the new rules.
Shortly after the passage of the bill, Doughty posted the following message on the wall of the Wolf Ledge Refuge facebook group: “This is not over and does not stop us from continuing our purpose of education to all and giving these beautiful animals a safe environment to live out their lives.”
