A Bristol man who accidentally shot himself with a shotgun in March faces felony charges for illegally possessing a firearm.
A May 5 indictment charges James T. Fitzpatrick, 63, with two Class C counts of possession of a firearm by a prohibited person. A Class C crime carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $5,000 fine.
Fitzpatrick cannot possess firearms due to a 1987 felony conviction for terrorizing with a dangerous weapon, according to the indictment.
A blast at Fitzpatrick’s Carl Bailey Road home at approximately 7:45 p.m., Thursday, March 20 was initially reported as an explosion of unknown origin, prompting the Maine State Police Bomb Team to respond.
Fitzpatrick was transported by ambulance to the Miles campus of LincolnHealth. He has since been discharged.
The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office ultimately determined Fitzpatrick’s injuries to be the result of an accidental, self-inflicted gunshot.
