A Newcastle retiree faces a felony charge after allegedly brandishing a large knife and threatening to kill a sheriff’s deputy in his apartment Jan. 10.
Gary L. Collamore, 68, faces one count of class C criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon. A class C crime carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $5,000 fine.
Lincoln County Sheriff’s Deputy Ryan Chubbuck was dispatched to Collamore’s Newcastle Center apartment at about 4:45 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 10, for a report of a large, suicidal man with a knife.
The man “was threatening to hurt any officer” who would respond, Chubbuck said in his report.
Chubbuck entered the apartment and found Collamore about 10 feet away, “holding a very large knife,” Chubbuck said in his report. Chubbuck pointed his gun at Collamore and ordered him to drop the knife, but Collamore refused.
“The subject took a step at me and raised the knife into the low ready position and stated, ‘I would kill you,'” Chubbuck said in his report. “As he did this I placed my finger on the trigger of my weapon, beginning to apply pressure to it.
“At this point, I was in fear that the subject could lunge at me and stab me. I stated, ‘If you take one more step, I will shoot you, now drop the knife.’ The subject paused and then dropped the knife to the ground.”
Chubbuck used two sets of handcuffs to restrain Collamore, who stands 6 feet tall and weighs 280 pounds.
Collamore is free on $500 cash bail. His bail conditions prohibit the possession or use of alcohol or dangerous weapons, require him to report daily by phone and weekly in person to Maine Pretrial Services, and subject him to random searches and tests.
A Lincoln County grand jury indicted Collamore March 9. His arraignment will take place in Lincoln County Superior Court in Wiscasset at 8:30 a.m. April 27.
Collamore’s court-appointed attorney is David Paris. “We anticipate a not-guilty plea at arraignment,” Paris said. He declined further comment on the case.
