The Grand Tour, an annual bicycle trip 2000 cyclists strong, plans to visit Newcastle in August.
Vélo Québec, a Canadian non-profit organization that promotes cycling (vélo is French for bicycle) organizes the event.
“The Grand Tour will celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2013,” Maxime St-Laurent of Vélo Québec Events wrote in an email to the Newcastle town office.
“To mark the occasion and make it unforgettable, we plan to take the Grand Tour in Maine, so our participants will enjoy your beautiful landscape,” he said.
“The Town of Newcastle is very attractive to our organization,” St-Laurent wrote, and Vélo has identified it as “a potential stopover site.”
St-Laurent will meet with Newcastle municipal officials at the Newcastle town office Thurs., March 15 at 3 p.m. in order “to establish a partnership” between Vélo and the town.
