After correctly spelling “fiesta” and “mahi mahi” in the final round, Riley Stevenson, a sixth grader from Great Salt Bay Community School, won the Lincoln County Spelling Bee Feb. 10.
Fifth through eighth graders from Jefferson Village School, Edgecomb Eddy School, South Bristol School, Bristol Consolidated School, and Great Salt Bay Community School competed for the chance to attend and compete in the state spelling bee in March.
Liz Norton, a sixth grade teacher from Great Salt Bay, hosted the county spelling bee, giving each word to a competitor in a sentence, and pronouncing each syllable carefully.
In the first round, four students were eliminated of the 10 that were competing. By the second round, only four girls remained.
In the fourth round, only Stevenson and Asiah Wilmot, an eighth grader from Jefferson remained.
Both girls spelled words incorrectly during the sixth round, Stevenson spelling “cummerbund” and Wilmot, “necessary.”
From there, both girls spelled each word correctly until the ninth round, when Wilmot incorrectly spelled “saxophone.”
Stevenson will represent Lincoln County at the Maine State Spelling Bee in Augusta, March 22.
