Archaeology, which means “the study of old things,” has provided an answer many questions about our forebears.
On Sat., June 25, 1-5 p.m., the Friends of Colonial Pemaquid are sponsoring the fourth annual Archaeology Discovery Workshop for those interested in learning more about archaeology by trying it themselves.
A simulated excavation for participants, along with a simulated sandbox dig and other discovery activities for the younger set is available.
Featured historical archaeologist is Dr. Neill DePaoli, who will provide training and share some of his 30-plus years of excavation experience, this hands-on event will appeal to both children (best suited for ages 5 and up) and adults.
DePaoli will also conduct brief tours of Colonial Pemaquid at 2 and 4 p.m., emphasizing the importance of archeology and the complex history of the historical site.
Participants will come away with an understanding of the important role played by historical archaeology in reconstructing the stories of prehistoric and historic occupants of the Pemaquid peninsula. (Rain date is Sun., June 26.) Admission to the archaeology workshop is free and donations are welcome.
An historian and historical archaeologist, Dr. DePaoli holds a Ph.D. degree in history from the University of New Hampshire and also directed preparation of the permanent exhibit at Colonial Pemaquid, “Guns, Politics and Furs: Pemaquid and the Defense of the Eastern Frontier, 1677-1761,” on display in the site’s reconstructed Fort William Henry.
