Hannaford Supermarkets customers should not eat a type of cantaloupe formerly available at the chain’s stores.
Burch Farms of North Carolina announced a recall of their Athena cantaloupes July 28. The fruit might contain listeria monocytogenes.
“Listeria has the potential to cause serious illness,” according to a Hannaford press release. No illnesses have been associated with the recall.
“If stickered, the label on the item will reference Burch Farms and read: Cantaloupe PLU 4319,” according to the press release.
Hannaford has instructed customers who bought the cantaloupes to return them or dispose of them and return the sticker for a full refund.
The product has been removed from stores.
Scarborough-based Hannaford Supermarkets operates stores in Boothbay Harbor, Damariscotta and Waldoboro, as well as 178 others in New England and New York.
