The front entrance of Hannaford in Waldoboro was smashed in the early hours of Oct. 8 by a pick-up truck in a failed attempt to steal an automatic teller machine, according to Waldoboro Police Chief Bill Labombarde.
The truck, a two-tone GMC 2500, had backed into the front of the building, and an unknown number of subjects attempted to steal the ATM from the grocery store, he said.
Waldoboro Police received the call about the attempted theft at 3:31 a.m. The truck and ATM were still at the scene when the police arrived. Now, both the truck and the ATM are being held at the Waldoboro Municipal Building.
As of this posting, no one has been apprehended and no injuries resulting from the incident are known, Labombarde said.
The store was closed as of 8:30 a.m. Hannaford Regional Director of Operations Bob Hatem said hopes are the store will re-open later today if the building is found to be structurally safe.
No items were known to be missing from the store, Hatem said.
The incident remains under investigation by Waldoboro Police, with assistance from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division and the Maine State Police evidence recovery team, Labombarde said.
Anyone with information relating to this incident is asked to call Waldoboro Police Chief Bill Labombarde at 832-4500 or LCSO Detective Terry Michaud at 832-4000.
