The Hannaford Supermarket chain will complete the expansion of its Waldoboro location by the end of 2016.
Eric Blom, a spokesman for Hannaford, said the store would undergo a substantial expansion throughout the course of the year, with improvements at the location wrapping up in the calendar year’s fourth quarter.
Blom said the store will grow from 11,700 square feet to approximately 18,700.
According to Blom, a major goal of the expansion is to offer customers a better shopping experience.
“The store will be adding items across the board. There will be a lot more variety for customers,” Blom said.
Specifically, Blom said the expansion across all areas of the store would incorporate a full-service deli, a larger meat department, a seafood case, a baking area, and a bigger selection of fresh produce.
He said the relatively small size of the Waldoboro location, compared to other Hannaford grocery stores, led to the decision to expand.
“The location is one of our smaller stores and we know shoppers appreciate greater variety. We like to do what we can for our customers,” Blom said.
Blom said the store’s interior décor will also be getting a facelift as part of this year’s expansion process.
Hannaford’s site plan for the expansion was approved by the Waldoboro Planning Board in June 2015.
The Scarborough-based chain announced plans for the expansion at its Waldoboro store in March 2015 and met with the Waldoboro Planning Board in April and May 2015.
Blom said the company is looking forward to its future in the Waldoboro area.
“We are excited to be expanding our service to the customers of the area,” Blom said.
