There was some excitement May 17, when a Harbor Seal was observed making his way up from Damariscotta River to the base of the Damariscotta Mills Fish Ladder.
The alewives were running, but during the seal’s visit there wasn’t a single seagull or osprey flying overhead, as usually accompanies a run.
There was speculation that the itinerant visitor had intimidated the flying fishermen, as he quietly cruised the area.
He was observed making repeated attempts swimming below the surface against the swift current, happily enjoying the full-course meal coming his way.
After fighting the current and eating a while, he would allow the white water to carry him back to the easy water near the railroad tracks to take a breather, rest a minute, pose for the cameras, and slowly make his way up to the smorgasbord again.
