Hay bales inside the body of an N.A. Reny Construction Inc. dump truck caught fire when holes in the body exposed the exhaust to the bales of hay Tuesday, Dec. 2, according to Edgecomb firefighter Wally Staples.
The driver of the truck, Eddie, who only gave his first name, said he was driving north on Route 1 from Boothbay when he saw smoke in his rearview mirror.
“At first I thought it was just compost,” Eddie said. “But it kept smoking.”
According to Eddie, he stopped his truck at Skip Cahill Tire and called the fire department.
“We soaked the hay. That’s about all we could do,” Staples said.
The Edgecomb Fire Department responded to the scene at 11:50 a.m.
