So far, a Flash Flood Watch and a High Surf Advisory are the only warnings issued by the National Weather Service in regard to approaching hurricane Arthur, which is expected to bring some heavy rainfall and high winds to Lincoln County beginning in the afternoon hours of July 4.
Most of the organized outdoor activities for the afternoon and evening, such as fireworks shows and parades, have been previously cancelled.
Relatively mild conditions during the morning and early afternoon hours are “the calm before the storm” as hurricane Arthur steadily moves north toward areas offshore of Lincoln County.
While Arthur is forecast to stay offshore after degrading to a tropical storm, the high winds and heavy rainfall associated with the west side of the storm are forecast to begin pummeling Lincoln County in the late afternoon and continue to increase in strength. The storm’s effects are forecast to continue through the overnight hours and into early Saturday morning, according to forecasters. The heaviest rainfall is expected along the immediate coast, according to forecasters.
There may be some embedded thunderstorms in the weather front, especially during the evening hours, according to forecasts.
The rest of the holiday weekend is forecast to be clear, however beachgoers and boaters should beware of strong tides and rip currents as well as high waves, according to forecasts.
The Lincoln County News will continue to follow the progress of the effect hurricane Arthur is having on the area and post any additional information here as soon as it is obtained.
