Medomak Middle School in Waldoboro closed for the day Wednesday, Nov. 30 after firefighters responded to the school the previous night for a report of smoke.
According to RSU 40 Superintendent Steve Nolan, the smoke resulted from a hot plate being accidentally left on the evening of Tuesday, Nov. 29.
“It appears a warming plate was accidentally left on and the contents slow-cooked, began to smoke, and produced enough smoke for the fire department to respond,” Nolan said.
The superintendent said there was no fire. The accident occurred in the late evening and no students were in the building at the time. Custodians reported the smoke.
Nolan said that as of Wednesday morning, the smoke was gone, but there was a lingering smell in the building. The school decided to close for the day to be safe and to have time to determine what exactly produced the smoke.
The school is scheduled to be open tomorrow, but could be canceled for a second day if necessary.
“We are taking it one day at a time. Hopefully we can reopen tomorrow,” Nolan said.
