The Boothbay Regional Humane Society (BRHS) is now in compliance with state law and is licensed as a charitable organization, effective until Nov. 30, 2009. Elaine Thibodeau, administrator for the state’s Charitable Solicitations Program in the Dept. of Professional and Financial Regulation, made the announcement this week.
In August, the Attorney General’s Office ordered the BRHS to cease and desist from soliciting contributions until it was licensed under the program.
According to state law, a charitable organization that conducts more than $10,000 in fundraising from the public has to register with the Office of Licensing and Registration within the financial regulation department.
A recently completed audit shows BRHS had direct public support of $224,203 in 2007 and assets of $2 million.
In November, BRHS also filed a Form 990, required annually of 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations. Internal Revenue Service online records show the previous form was filed about eight years ago.
Thibodeau confirmed BRHS would have to submit the form each year to obtain renewal of its charitable license.
