About 140 people turned out at the Gardiner American Legion Oct. 25 to celebrate the 100th birthday of Dorothy “Dot” Fraser.
Fraser is the oldest sister of the late George Hutchings of Damariscotta. Hutchings served Damariscotta as its police chief between 1967 and 1998. He passed away in Feb. 2003.
Born Oct. 31, 1909, Fraser was 25 years old when her baby brother was born. She was married to the late Arthur Fraser for 50 years. The couple raised three children, making their home in West Gardiner and, later, Zephyr Hills, Fla.
Besides her role as a homemaker, Fraser worked in the Commonwealth Shoe Factory in Gardiner. She raised two foster children and a stepchild with her late husband.
Up until three weeks ago, she lived on her own, only recently moving into an assisted living arrangement in Farmingdale.
With one party for family and friends behind her, Fraser is looking forward to another celebration on her actual birthday.
“She is still sharp,” marveled one family member. “She hasn’t lost anything.”
