A maximum-security inmate at Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset faces new felony charges for allegedly punching two corrections officers.
Joshua R. Boyd, 20, of Bath, faces two counts of Class C assault on an officer and one count of Class C aggravated criminal mischief, all felonies; and a Class D charge of refusing to submit to arrest, a misdemeanor.
Boyd and another inmate allegedly damaged the sprinkler system in the jail’s Special Management Unit at about 6 p.m., Tuesday, April 1, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office Detective Terry Michaud said in a statement.
Boyd subsequently began banging on the door and windows to the area with broom and mop handles. A pair of corrections officers attempted to enter the area.
Boyd allegedly punched the officers “in the head area,” Michaud said. Boyd “had to be subdued by being tasered.” The statement only identifies the officers as Archer and Temple.
Boyd remains at Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset. His bail is set at $75,000 cash on the new charges.
The jail’s Special Management Unit segregates maximum-security inmates from the general population. It also contains medical and mental-health units.
Boyd also faces felony assault and bail violation charges in connection with another incident in the maximum-security unit at 8:08 a.m., Dec. 4, 2013.
A statement by Lincoln County Sheriff’s Deputy Scott Mercier describes the incident.
Boyd “stood up, walked over and struck” fellow inmate Joseph M. Solomon II while Solomon’s “back was turned reading a newspaper,” Mercier said.
Boyd “continued to throw roundhouse punches, alternating fists,” Mercier said. Boyd “struck approximately 20 blows” to Solomon’s head.
Solomon “was unable to defend himself and could only block his face to help protect himself,” Mercier said. Corrections staff eventually pulled Boyd off Solomon.
Boyd faces charges of Class B aggravated assault and Class C violating conditions of release, both felonies, in the December incident. His bail is set at $5,000 cash on those charges.
Lincoln County court records do not offer any information about how Boyd came to be an inmate at Two Bridges.
Boyd is due to appear in Lincoln County Superior Court on the new charges at 8:30 a.m., Thursday, May 29.
Class B, C and D crimes carry maximum penalties of 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine, five years in prison and a $5,000 fine, and 364 days in jail and a $2,000 fine, respectively.
Boyd’s court-appointed attorney, Jennifer A. Davis, was not available for comment.
