The investigation into a Dec. 26 arson and burglary that closed Huber’s Market of Wiscasset indefinitely has produced “no new leads” according to Wiscasset Police Lt. John Allen. The break in and subsequent fire caused extensive damage to the Rt. 1 convenience store and left 10 employees without work for the foreseeable future.
According to Allen, the Wiscasset Police Dept. is working closely with the State Fire Marshal’s Office (SMFO) and other local law enforcement agencies.
“We are actively and aggressively pursuing the incident,” said Sgt. Ken Grimes of the SFMO.
The fire, which originated in the basement, crippled both the electrical and plumbing capabilities of the store. Huber’s Market owner Kyle Yacoben described the damage as “considerable” and is in the process of recouping his losses through an insurance claim.
“I hope to have a plan of attack soon but for now I’m still in limbo,” Yacoben said Jan. 3.
An initial investigation revealed the intruder or intruders destroyed the front door and stole an undisclosed amount of cash from the register. Yacoben, who had closed the market at 7 p.m. due to a blizzard, said his office was ransacked in an apparent attempt to find money.
Individuals with any information concerning the burglary and arson are urged to contact the Wiscasset Police Dept. at 882-8203.
