A Jefferson man involved in a forgery ring pleaded guilty to several forgery and theft charges in Lincoln County Superior Court June 30.
Daroyl Wilson, 21, of Jefferson, received a five-year sentence with all but one year suspended, three years probation, and he will be charged a yet-to-be-determined amount in restitution to several victims.
Authorities say that Wilson, with the help and guidance of Franklin Arbour, Jr., of Chelsea, printed counterfeit currency and fraudulent payroll checks in the summer of 2010. The pair is believed to have printed more than $10,000 in fraudulent checks, Assistant District Attorney Deb Cashman said during the June 30 hearing.
Cashman described Wilson as the liaison between Arbour and several alleged accomplices, who authorities believe used the counterfeit bills at stores and brought the change back to Wilson, she said.
A total of eight men, including Nathan Brewer, John Hourihan and Thomas Hourihan, Jr., face or have faced charges in the case.
Wilson was serving the final hours of a jail term for violating bail conditions at the time of his hearing; he was ordered to report for his forgery sentence on July 3.
Many residents of the Twin Villages know Barlow as a former long-time employee of the Maine Coast Book Shop & Café in Damariscotta.
According to a written statement by WMS Principal Linda Bleile, Barlow – a parent of a student at the school – organized a fall fundraiser for the PTO annually for four years.
After this year’s fundraiser, Barlow pocketed $833 in cash instead of depositing it in the PTO’s account and later fraudulently withdrew another $400 from the fundraising account, according to court documents
Barlowe received a deferred disposition for one year, which means she will have a year to successfully pay restitution to the PTO, plus an additional $500 fine. If she does, and is not convicted of any other crimes, she will be convicted of one count of misdemeanor theft and will not face any jail time.
If she fails to complete the requirements of her deferred disposition, she will face felony charges.
