A 10-year-old Jefferson girl is hoping to raise $500 in a fundraiser she created for the Lincoln County Animal Shelter.
Halie Winchenbach, a fourth-grader at Jefferson Village School, said she and some friends came up with the idea of holding a fundraiser last December.
“It was because I love the animals so much and I really care for them,” she said.
With the help of her mother, Molly Winchenbach, Halie’s efforts will culminate at the Furry Fundraiser on Saturday, April 19. The event will be held at Jefferson Village School
from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The event will include dog washing, a bake sale, a 50-50 raffle, and Halie hopes live music and a dance performance.
Barring a live band, Molly, who DJs other events at the school as DJ Mollipop, will provide music at the event. Either way, Halie hopes she and some friends will perform dance
moves they learned at Midcoast Dance Studio.
There will also be a photo booth where people can have photos taken with their own pets or with animals brought from the shelter, Halie said.
Molly said most of the activities will be by donation only, though the photos and Halie-designed t-shirts for sale have fixed prices. All donations and proceeds will be given to
the shelter, she said.
The event will be held mostly outdoors, if weather allows.
Carrie Koskela, the office manager at the Lincoln County Animal Shelter, is glad the community is willing to fundraise for the shelter.
“Halie, she’s 10 and she came up with a great idea,” Koskela said. “It’s nice when people take the time to give, or to set up events like this.”
The shelter will be bringing one or two dogs that are comfortable in events like the fundraiser and some cats in cages, as well as information on the shelter’s ongoing needs and
volunteer opportunities, Koskela said. All the animals will be available for adoption, she said.
