A single car accident on Dock Road in Alna Nov. 8 claimed the life of a Jefferson man.
According to a press release from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, Steven Parlin, 27, was traveling east on Dock Road at a high rate of speed in a black 1995 Ford Ranger pickup truck sometime around 9:45 p.m.
Parlin’s truck crossed into the westbound travel lane where he lost control of the vehicle, according to the LCSO press release.
The truck then re-entered the eastbound travel lane where it struck a guardrail and a tree before falling several feet into the Sheepscot River.
Alna Volunteer Fire Department Assistant Chief Roger Whitney lives about 300 feet from the accident scene and said he heard the accident when it happened. “I heard the crash all the way to my house and knew what it must be,” he said.
Whitney said he was the first to arrive on the scene. When he arrived he saw the pickup truck in three to four feet of water. “Its lights were still on but I didn’t see any movement in the cab,” he said.
Whitney then called 9-1-1 and requested help from the Alna Fire Department and Wiscasset Fire & Rescue.
Whitney took command of the scene. When enough people arrived to support a water rescue, Whitney sent AVFD Capt. Mike Averill into the water to try to open the cab door and recover Parlin. Assisted by LCSO Deputy Ken Hatch, Averill pulled Parlin from the truck’s cab.
“It was apparent that the victim was deceased when pulled from the truck,” Whitney said
LCSO Deputies Ken Hatch, Kevin Dennison, and Major Ken Mason conducted the primary investigation. A reconstruction of the crash is being conducted by LCSO Crash Reconstruction Specialist Sgt. Jason Nein. LCSO Sgt. Ronald Rollins and Detective Terry Michaud conducted a forensic mapping of the crash site.
According to the LCSO, Parlin was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. Per standard procedure, a blood sample will be taken by the Medical Examiner’s Office, in an effort to determine if alcohol or drugs were present in Parlin’s system.
At press time the crash remains under investigation.
