A Jefferson man was able to ride his motorcycle away after he was struck in the side by a deer the afternoon of July 7.
Mike Bailey, 56, was headed northbound on Route 215 in Jefferson at about 1:15 p.m. when, just south of the intersection with Hinks Road, he saw one deer cross the road from a field to his left, and a second deer jumped out and struck his left leg and motorcycle from the side.
“I kept the bike up, but he smashed my tank, smashed my directional,” Bailey said.
Bailey felt light-headed after the accident, but soon felt well enough to ride his 2003 Suzuki Intruder.
“It stunned me to start with, but I don’t feel so bad now,” he said.
The 60- to 70-pound deer died as a result of the accident, according to Lincoln County Sheriff Todd Brackett, who responded to the scene.
Brackett estimated the damage to Bailey’s motorcycle at $1,200.
Jefferson Fire & Rescue also responded to the accident.
An earlier edition of this story listed the incorrect date of the accident. The correct date is July 7.
