A bus carrying about a dozen students from Jefferson Village School snagged a low hanging Fairpoint Communications line on Rt. 32 in Jefferson during the afternoon of Sept. 27.
A hatch on the roof of the bus snagged the line when bus driver Elaine Sutherberg attempted to utilize a turnaround on the side of the road, said Lincoln County Sheriff’s Deputy Brian Collamore. No one was injured in the incident, Collamore said.
Sutherburg stopped the bus at the scene.
Pete Gallace, the principal at Jefferson Village School, was at the scene while the students waited for a new bus to bring them home.
“The bus driver and the kids were great. They did exactly what they were supposed to do,” Gallace said.
The communications line that made contact with the bus was one of three left lines left hanging low after an apparent motor vehicle accident Sept. 22 required replacing a utility pole, Collamore said. The lines apparently had not been refastened to the new pole, he said.
Collamore said the representative from Fairpoint Communications on the scene was going to splice the line, which broke when it was being removed form the bus. Collamore said the Fairpoint representative would flag the line with caution tape and contact his office about having the three lines fastened to the new pole.
