Join the great backyard bird count. Count for fun. Count for the future. Bird and nature fans throughout North America are invited to join tens of thousands of everyday bird watchers for the 12th annual Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC), Feb. 13-16.
On Mon., Feb. 9 at 9 a.m. learn how to participate in the 2009 Great Backyard Bird Count with Midcoast Audubon Society member Jody Telfair at Spectrum Generations in Damariscotta.
She will discuss the three simple steps to follow in order to count birds in as many places and on as many days for at least 15 minutes between Feb. 13 and 16.
Telfair will also discuss how to attract and care for these fine, feathered friends as they travel north for a spectacular summer along the coast of Maine.
Birds that come to feeders change over the seasons. On average, over 300 bird species can be seen annually in Midcoast Maine – the beginning of the Atlantic boreal coast.
Call 563-1363 to let Telfair know if joining her to learn about participating in the 2009 GBYBC.
Anyone can take part, from novice bird watchers to experts, by counting birds for as little as 15 minutes (or as long as they wish) on one or more days of the event and reporting their sightings online at www.birdcount.org.
Participants can also explore what birds others are finding in their backyards. The most reported bird in 2008 was the Northern Cardinal.
