The Jefferson Board of Selectmen will hold a public hearing at the town office on Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. for the purpose of discussion and reaching a solution as to the request for a junkyard in town.
The Board met with Robert Pierpont, Jr. and reviewed his application for an auto graveyard/junkyard permit at their regular meeting Tues., Oct. 14.
“The DEP (Dept. of Environmental Protection) has already been down there. They said it looked fine,” Pierpont said at the meeting.
Pierpont has until the end of November to either get the permit or remove the cars from his property, according to selectmen James Hilton. The Jefferson car collector said that he has been trying to sell some of his vehicles, but no one is buying in the current economy.
The restrictions have also changed. Pierpont said that simply stating that he was a collector was enough to remain within the law. Pierpont said he has taken steps to follow DEP guidelines and also with the Dept. of Transportation.
“You can’t even see the cars from the road,” he said.
The hearing will give people in town a chance to air their concerns, said Hilton. Hilton said that the DEP may or may not show up. He said that the DEP might grant Pierpont approval in the form of a signed letter.
Other concerns may arise at the public hearing, at the end of which the Board may either grant the junkyard permit, not grant the junkyard permit or table the issue until certain steps are taken.
