Bob and Lynn Dains, owners of the new Atlantic Storage Center in Waldoboro, said their business was born out their own difficulties in finding available storage units in the area.
The 100-unit facility, located on Route 1 in Waldoboro just below Maritime Farms, opened in late July and so far business has been good, Bob Dains said.
“We’ve been told by people we’re on track,” he said.
Bob and Lynn live in Milford, Conn. where Bob works as a certified public accountant and certified financial planner and Lynn is the firm’s office administrator, but Bob said he has been coming to Maine since at least 1954.
The Dainses and their extended family had been coming for years to stay at a cabin Bob’s grandfather built in Nobleboro on Damariscotta Lake in 1960, but the cabin ended up being too small of a space, Lynn Dains said.
When the couple decided in 2009 to tear down the cabin to build a larger home, they had to find a place to store their belongings during construction.
“I called from July to the last week in August and I couldn’t find a place,” Lynn said, which sparked the idea to open their own storage center since other storage customers could have been in the same situation.
Atlantic Storage Center offers units from as small as 5-by-5 feet up to 10-by-20, with rates ranging from $40 per month up to $125 per month, Bob said.
The facility is not always staffed, but is open 24 hours with security cameras and night lighting, the Dainses said.
