Hundreds of people flocked to the Damariscotta downtown July 4 to witness the annual fireworks display and enjoy a town-wide celebration of America’s birth.
Though a thundershower was forecast for the area, skies remained clear and gave those who gathered an unobstructed view of the nearly 30 minute show which began with a single red rocket at roughly 9:15.
Along the Damariscotta-Newcastle Bridge, enterprising sorts brought lawn chairs and coolers while others assembled in the municipal parking lot.
The annual fireworks display is made possible through the Damariscotta-Newcastle fireworks committee and orchestrated by Hallowell-based Central Maine Pyrotechnics.
People who came to the downtown earlier were treated to an unusual aquatic competition featuring floating rubber birds. The event, known as the Rubber Ducky River Race, is sponsored by the Pemaquid Watershed Association, and involves setting loose an armada of the venerable bath time toys on the turning of the tide with local merchants sponsoring prizes for the winners.
The Damariscotta-Newcastle Bridge served as the finish line as a mostly enthusiastic crowd cheered the ducks arrival.
