Contest categories were separated by frequency of publication into daily and weekly, and in most categories the weeklies
were separated into two sections based on circulation.
Editor Sherwood Olin received a third place award for his editorial “Rage, rage against the dying of the light,” published
August 2012.

Former LCN reporter Shlomit Auciello placed first in the Environmental Story category for her January 2013 story, “Lincoln
County farmers consider food labeling” on genetic modified organisms, or GMOs.
Reporter Dominik Lobkowicz placed third in the Spot News Photo category for his photo entitled, “Boothbay barn burns.”
In the Sports Photo category, Paula Roberts placed first with “Taking one for the team” of September 2012; and second with
“Championship celebration” of February 2013; and in the Picture Story category, Roberts placed third with “Midcoast
Nutcracker” of December 2012.
Nationally recognized artist Glenn Chadbourne has created editorial cartoons for The Lincoln County News for more than 20
years. Chadbourne placed third in the Editorial Cartoon category for his submissions from July, November and December of
2012.
Lobkowicz attended the dinner with staffers Kathy Onorato and Charlotte Boynton, and former LCN reporter Auciello.
“It was nice to see all the various photo entries, including winners and all that they showed during the dinner,” Lobkowicz
said. “The dinner and the award ceremony was the best attended event of the conference and it was a very congenial
atmosphere, even among competitors,” he said.
He also said 2013 was the first time in recent years that The Lincoln County News has submitted to the Better Newspaper
Contest.
“I’m incredibly proud of my staff,” Olin said. “I don’t know how else to say it. Week in and week out, I know how good they
are and it’s nice to see the [Maine] Press Association has recognized that.”
