Construction is progressing essentially as planned on the new Jefferson Village School building. On April 8, The Lincoln County News toured the building to see how the interior is shaping up.
The roughly $14 million school is on track for opening this fall, said Mary Beth Van Keuren, the AOS 93 Owner’s Representative on the project, during the tour.
“They’re making good progress,” Van Keuren said. “In the beginning of August, it should be ready for kids to move in.”
Demolition of the old JVS building is scheduled to begin this summer, she said.
Site work will continue into the fall, including updates to ball fields and other projects on the grounds surrounding the school.
Brickwork on the exterior of the building is scheduled to begin on about two weeks; tiling and cabinetry in the interior should follow in the weeks after.
Just as the LCN tour began, Jefferson Fire Chief Wally Morris and Deputy Chief Darren Walker were finishing their tour of building to check for fire-safety-related issues. Morris said he has no concerns about the building at this point.
The State is paying $13,912,277 for the new building, said Jefferson Selectman Greg Johnston late last year. That amount will cover the full cost of construction. The town will not be responsible for any construction costs, but will cover about $263,000 in extras for the building, such as technology and gym equipment, Johnston said at that time.
