The Lincoln County News welcomes summer news intern Remy Segovia. A 2016 graduate of Wiscasset Middle High School and a student at the University of Maine, Segovia started work at the LCN on Monday, May 22.
Segovia has lived in Lincoln County for most of his life. Born in Miami, he spent the first five years of his life in Florida, moving to Wiscasset just before beginning the first grade.
His interest in journalism began not too long before his graduation, starting with the most recent presidential campaign.
“I have always had an interest in being in front of the camera,” said Segovia. “As a matter of fact, that’s what had sparked my interest in broadcast journalism, to be an anchorman. But it’s what I saw in this past election that made me care less about being in front of the camera, and more about asking the questions that people want answered.”
“Some candidates would be asked softball questions, while others would be asked ‘gotcha’ questions,” Segovia said. “Seeing this, I decided that I wanted to ask the questions. I wanted to ask the right questions, I wanted to hold the politicians’ feet to the fire, I wanted to be a positive influence in the world of journalism.”
The election not only grew Segovia’s interest in journalism, but politics as well. “This past election shined light on a lot of the issues the people of this country face in their day-to-day lives,” he said. “Seeing those issues, it made me curious just how large of an impact it had on these people, as well as what could be done to solve those problems.” Segovia is double majoring at the University of Maine in journalism and political science.
“The main reason I applied for The Lincoln County News internship was to gain experience and stockpile news clips I can use to further my career,” said Segovia. “But I chose The Lincoln County News specifically because I have been a resident of Lincoln County for nearly all my life, yet I know there is so much more to learn about the community and the people in the community. I thought working at the paper would be a great opportunity to learn more about the place that I grew up in.”
Segovia will work at the paper as a reporter, covering local events.
