The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office recently arrested a suspect in the April 8 theft of $1200 in quarters from a Damariscotta home.
Lt. Rand Maker arrested Jason McKenney in Waldoboro April 30.
McKenney, 38, a transient, faces felony charges of burglary and theft by unauthorized taking or transfer.
The charges stem from a theft from the Biscay Road home of Kevin and Rhonda Benner (see “Damariscotta Police seek quarter theft suspect” in the April 28 edition of The Lincoln County News).
A tip from someone who picked McKenney up near the Benner’s home led to the arrest, Sgt. Chad Andrews of the Damariscotta Police Dept. said. The person called Kevin Benner after reading his letter to the editor in the April 14 edition of The Lincoln County News.
In the letter, Kevin Benner wrote about his wife’s recent health problems and the couple’s plans for the money – to purchase a boat for “a summer of anticipated fun.” Benner called on the thief to “do the right thing and return the money.”
As of May 2, McKenney was awaiting a video arraignment at Two Bridges Regional Jail. His bail was set at $10,000 cash.
